FIR launched against ‘The Tribune’ and the ‘reporter’ on ‘Aadhar data breach’ story: A news report has appeared in Indian Express that a case has been registered against The Tribune newspaper and the journalist for publishing a news story in which it was reported that unknown sellers allegedly selling Aadhaar numbers through Whatsapp. FIR launched against ‘The Tribune’ and the ‘reporter’ on ‘Aadhar data breach’ story Deputy director BM Patnaik ,UIDAI, has mentioned in the FIR that the reporter and three other people contacted him for the article. Alok Kumar , the joint director of police said that inquiry was going on in this regard. The FIR was registered under sections 419 (punishment for cheating by impersonation), 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document) of the IPC, besides section 66 of the IT Act and section 36/37 of the Aadhaar Act. FIR launched against ‘The Tribune’ and the ‘reporter’ on ‘Aadhar data breach’ story It is to be mentioned that a report has been published in The Tribune recently on how an anonymous seller can sell the demographic data associated with Aadhar on WhatsApp for just Rs. 500. UIDAI had said in a statement after the news story was published that there had not been any Aadhaar data breach. It further said that the Aadhaar data, including biometric information, is fully safe and secure and there has not been any data breach of the biometric database. All data and information remains fully safe and secure with the highest encryption at UIDAI and a mere display of demographic information cannot be misused without biometrics, it added. -PTC News
