Last week three youngsters in the age group of 18 to 24 died, and about 25 people lost their lives in the past two weeks. The road was constructed by Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA). The authorities were blaming high speed for the accidents, but now they have started admitting that the poor condition of the road is also one of the crucial factors. Airport Road takes lives of 25 in 15 days, a virtual nightmare Citing the example of the accident that occurred on Saturday, in which 18-year-old Nikhil Sharma was killed when the axle of his car broke after hitting a huge pit on the road, Mohali Deputy Commissioner Gurpreet Kaur Sapra said, “Undoubtedly, the condition of the road is pathetic and it causes accidents. I will seek an appointment with the Additional Principal Secretary, Punjab Housing and Urban Development, to redress the problem,” Nikhil Sharma’s father Joginder Ram Sharma said had the road been without potholes, his son would have been alive today. publive-image The road had started caving in within six months of its construction. A Vigilance probe is on in this regard against GMADA's former Chief Engineer SP Singh, alias Bhalwan, who is currently lodged in a jail in a corruption case.
