Breaking News : Gold Coast 2018: Hockey : Indian girls overpower South Africa, enter semis India made it a double in hockey as both men and women teams made to last four grade in XXI Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast on Tuesday. While men's team had beaten Malaysia 2-1 in the morning, women's team defeated South Africa by a late seconf half goal to book a berth in the semi-finals. Skipper Rani Rampal scored the all important goal in the 47th minute for India's third win in four matches. After losing to Wales in the opening game, Indian girls beat Malaysia, England and South Africa. Realizing that a win would guarantee them a place in the semis, Indian girls played good hockey, worked out good moves and defended their citadel well. They did concede series of penalty corners, especially at the start of the second half, but managed to thwart any South African attempt to convert any of these into a goal. Indian girls enjoyed territorial advantage throughout the game. Though the South Africans put up a spirited fight and attempted to match their more experienced opponents in every department of the game but luck did not side with them. India has shown remarkable recovery after the opening game disaster. Besides India, England look certain to make the semis from the group while the hosts Australia and New Zealand may make the grade from the other group. —PTC News
