Monsoon session 2018 begins today: Ready to discuss all issues, says PM MODI The Monsoon session of the Parliament has started from July 18 to August 10 and will have 18 sittings in both houses i.e. Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha. The opposition and the centre look forward to discuss all the pending bills and relevant issues. According to Union Minister Ananth Kumar, an all-party meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday night was held for smooth-functioning of Monsoon Session and it received a “positive” outcome. Nearly 67 bills are stuck in both houses of the Parliament. Among them are Triple Divorce, Fugitive Law and Muslim Marriage Protection Bill in the top Agenda of the Government. The Opposition parties, led by Congress may target the in-power Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over various amendments. Adjournment motion notice in Rajya Sabha over cases of mob lynching and attack on Swami Agnivesh (in Jharkhand) was given by Communist Party of India MP D Raja ahead of the monsoon session of the Parliament.

  • External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj and home minister Rajnath Singh are also attending the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
  • Meanwhile, YSR Congress MPs were protesting at Gandhi statue in Parliament. They were demanding special status for Andhra Pradesh.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also reached Parliament for monsoon session. PM MODI before the start of Parliament Monsoon Session said, “We hope the Parliament will run smoothly. Whatever issues any party has, it can raise on the floor of the house. The government is ready for any kind of discussions. This is the monsoon session. Many states are suffering due to monsoon (heavy rains) while many have received below average rainfall. There can be a discussion on this too.”He also added that “May the productivity of the forthcoming session and the rich levels of the debate also become a source of inspiration for the various state assemblies. Many important decisions in the nation’s interest will be taken up in the monsoon session.”
  • Classical dancer Sonal Mansingh, author Rakesh Sinha and sculptor Raghunath Mohapatra took oath as nominated members of Rajya Sabha.
  • Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said that the WiFi services have been installed inside the Lok Sabha. The members would be able to access government websites through the intranet service.
  • Rajya Sabha was postponed till 12 pm after protest held by Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MPs over special status demand for Andhra Pradesh.
  • Congress MP Jyotiraditya Scindia says in Lok Sabha, “The government which led farmers to commit suicide, under whose regime women are being raped every day...we move a no-confidence motion against you.”
The no-confidence motion moved by the Opposition has been accepted by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan. -PTC NEWS
