More nutritional meals to be given to 9.5 lakh children at anganwadi centres 9.5 lakh children who dine at 27,000 anganwadi centres in Punjab will be provided with more nutritional meals, as the state government is soon going to change the menu for breakfast and lunch. To improve nutritive value, the state women and child development department has proposed a supply of maximum fortified items, including flour and oil. The idea is to provide wholesome, fresh, cooked meals at anganwadi centres, so that calorie and nutrition content of each meal gets enriched. At the same time, Markfed (Punjab State Cooperative Supply and Marketing Federation) has approached the state women and child development department with a proposal to provide raw material for preparation of meals at anganwadi centres. Women and child development minister Aruna Chaudhary said, daliya, kheer and panjeeri were being served at anganwadi centers for many years. “As Markfed has shown interest in providing food items to anganwadis, we have handed them the list of our proposed menu as we want to change the existing menu,” she said. The new menu will include rajma-chawal, aloo-nutrie sabzi, parantha, and vegetable pulao. There is also a proposal for distributing bananas among severely malnourished children. -PTC News
