Navjot Kaur has scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman to win gold at the Senior Asian Wrestling Championships in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on Friday. For the past decade, international wrestler Navjot's father Sukhchain Singh, a farmer from a village outside Tarn Taran in Punjab took loans to support, train his daughter. Devoid of proper government support the wrestler's father has accumulated a debt of Rs 13 lakh and now the gold medal winner expects a lucrative offer from the Punjab government to support her father and family. “I have come to know that Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh congratulated me through a tweet. I always wanted to join the Punjab police and hope for the position of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) from the Punjab government after winning this medal. There is no announcement yet from the government. But I would like to wait for some more time,” said the gold medalist. Navjot also talked about putting a mechanism which will help out athletes who are in need and not purposely to those who have already achieved or reached a level of financial independence on their own. “Not all athletes can get medals. There should be a mechanism to support them so that they can live with dignity even if they do not win a medal,” said Navjot.
