Pad Woman of Patiala, Ruhpreet Kaur is changing the lives of women drastically. Here's how!

Akshay Kumar's next release 'Padman' might have been postponed due to Padmaavat from January to February, but nothing could stop the Pad Woman of Patiala - Ruhpreet Kaur for making a difference in the lives of common rural women of Patiala. A young woman who aspires to change the way women take care of themselves during their menstrual cycle, Roohpreet kaur has put her heart in soul in her dream. After separation from her husband, when Roohpreet returned to India she started concentrating on social work, especially for women. Ruhpreet started working with an NGO- 'Har Hath Kalam' in Patiala where in free education is provided to children from the backward class. Meanwhile she also participated in the Anti Begging Drive. During this time, she observed that teenagers and women who were married didn’t have much knowledge about maintaining menstrual hygiene and couldn’t take care of themselves and at the same time didn't consider it important rather a taboo. Thereafter, Ruhpreet had decided to bring a change in the lives of the young girls and women. She had decided to give them basic knowledge about menstrual hygiene along with supplying sanitary napkins free of cost. Successful in her endeavours, Roohpreet has by far given 5000 sanitary napkins to teenagers and married women. Under the National Rural Health Mission of the Government of India, Procurement of sanitary napkins, whether through Central supply by the Government of India, or through SHGs, has to be done at a fixed price of Rs. 7.50/- per pack of six sanitary napkins. The sanitary napkins are provided under NHM’s brand, ‘Freedays’. These napkins are being sold to adolescents girls at the rate of Rs. 6 per pack of six napkins by Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs). However, they fail to reach each and every woman due to poor health services. It is her dream to set up a small unit of sanitary napkins, where under privileged women and children are provided sanitary pads at lower rates than what is usually available in the market, so that they can live in a clean environment during their monthly cycle. -PTC News
