Santosh Mohan Dev, congress veteran, passed away at 83. A seven time congress MP, Santosh Mohan Dev passed away at 83 following kidney and other ailments. Survived by his former legislator wife Bithika Dev and four daughters, including Congress MP from Silchar Sushmita Dev, Mr. Dev breathed his last at 6.06 am this morning.
“Nothing could have prepared me for this moment. I lost him at 6.06am today. Thank you everyone for your prayers, your love for him,” Sushmita, who is currently in Silchar wrote on Twitter.
He was admitted to a private hospital after developing pneumonia.
The congress veteran was heavy Industry Minister in the UPA-I government led by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Dev was first elected to the Parliament in 1980. He has represented Silchar, Assam five times and twice from Tripura. He was the union minister of state for communications during 1986-1988 and the minister of for home from 1988 – 1989.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was saddened by his death. “Saddened by the passing away of Shri Santosh Mohan Dev. He was veteran political leader who worked extensively for welfare of people. My thoughts are with the family and supporters of Shri Santosh Mohan Dev in this hour of grief,” he said.

In a statement, she said, “His immense contribution to build the party in the Northeast, right from the grassroots level would always be remembered.” She added that his death is an irreparable loss to the nation.
