Sukhbir Badal welcomes SC decision to reopen 186 cases of 1984 massacre

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal today welcomed the apex court’s decision to reopen investigation into 186 cases pertaining to the 1984 anti Sikh genocide which were closed by the SIT even as he called for widening of the scope of the new SIT to inquire into nexus between Congress leaders and investigating agencies. The SAD president said the victims of the 1984 massacre, which had led to butchering of 8,000 Sikhs in Delhi and 40 other cities in the country following the assassination of former prime minister Indira Gandhi, had failed to get justice for 33 years because of this nexus between Congress leaders and investigating agencies. He said the new SIT formed by the apex court should also inquire into the functioning of officers of the Delhi Police who had deliberately weakened cases against several Congress leaders. “Role of other investigating agencies who have not proceeded appropriately in the matter should also be probed. Officers should be asked to name the political masters who had thwarted the cause of justice”, he added. The SAD president said it was of utmost importance to speed up investigation into the 186 cases and simultaneous start process of bringing the guilty to book. “Thirty three years have been lost. Many witnesses have passed away. Many others have become very old and infirm. We must ensure speedy trials to ensure those who perpetrated the anti-Sikh genocide do not escape justice”, he added. -PTC News
