Vitality Hockey Women's World Cup: Germany makes a winning start
Germany made a perfect start defeating South Africa 3-1 in the opening game of the Vitality Hockey Women's World Cup in London on Saturday.
Playing in its 10th World Cup and 91st game, Germany asserted its superiority from the start taking lead a minute before the end of first quarter through Viktoria Huse. Vikotoria, who was adjudged the player of the opening game also had the distinction of scoring the first penalty stroke goal of the tournament.
Interestingly, the opening game saw goals scored by all three methods - field goal, penalty corner and penalty stroke. While Viktoria Huse had the distinction of scoring the first field as well as penalty stroke goal, the credit of scoring the first penalty corner goal went to South Africa's  Lisa Marie Deetlefs. She scored from the first penalty corner in the  40th minute.
After Viktoria Huse had given the lead to Germany,  Charlotte Stapenhorst consolidated it with a brilliant goal immediately after change of ends.South Africa reduced the margin in the 40th minute. And in the 54th minute when Germany demanded a penalty corner, the Video referee awarded a penalty stroke that saw Viktoria Huse completing the tally for Germany.
