The horror of rape didn’t seem enough to the city that now a 10 year old rape victim delivered a baby girl at the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh around 9:32am on Thursday. The mother and new-born are reportedly safe though the new born is slightly under weight, reports said. “We hope the baby also recovers," the doctor told PTI. Dr Dasari described the C-section procedure, which was carried out at the hospital, as "uneventful", though it was a "high risk pregnancy". At the time of filing the story, the mother was still in the operation theatre, while the new born had been shifted to Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). “The new-born is premature, and weighs less than 2.1 kilogram as the delivery took place in 35 weeks. But she is fine,” said one of the sources. The delivery was done via a Caesarian section, which was scheduled from 9am to 11am. “The child was too young for a normal delivery. Her pelvic bones are not strong enough to push the baby and she doesn’t have the stamina to bear the labour pains,” said one of the officials. The girl who has delivered a baby this morning was never told about it, all that she knows is – there was a stone in her stomach. publive-image The victim was repeatedly raped allegedly by her uncle for several months and the crime came to light when the girl was taken to hospital on complaining of stomach ache last month, she was then found 30 weeks pregnant. On July 28, the Supreme Court had dismissed a plea seeking its nod for terminating the 32-week-old pregnancy of the rape survivor after taking note of a medical report that abortion was neither good for the girl nor for the foetus. Courts allow medical termination of pregnancy up to 20 weeks under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act and can make an exception if the foetus is genetically abnormal. We don’t know when will the sensitivity of issues like these will be brought to light in the right way. And therefore a way to safeguard women is created. -PTC News-
