More than 1,100 prisoners escaped from three detention centres in Indonesia after the major Earthquake.

Prison officials negotiated with the convicts that they would be allowed to go and check on their families. But some impatient prisoners, however, jumped the gun and instead of waiting for the release on special parole, escaped from prisons. Now, as and when they are caught, they will have to spend a longer time in prisons for their latest crime.

The 7.5- Magnitude earthquake and 10-feet tsunami created Havoc in Palu and Sulawesi cities killing more than 840 people. Also Read: Indonesia Earthquake: Cries For Help From Rubble; Death toll tops 832

The earthquake and Tsunami also caused huge cracks and some of the walls of prisons, too, collapsed. The water erupted from the floor of the prison yards causing panic among the prisoners. As a result, many of the prisoners were swept onto the roads with many of them escaping to freedom.

The prisoners escaped as they feared they would be affected by the earthquake. They also wanted to make sure of their security. Inmates fled from an overcapacity facility in Palu by breaking down its main door and another in Donggala, an area also hit by the disaster. Most of the convicts were in prison for corruption and narcotics offences. Five people who were convicted for terror-related crimes were moved out from the prison just days before the earthquake. -PTC NEWS
