The attack took place at around 11 am on Sunday on the Philippine island of Mindanao. The first blast killed two civilians and wounded 20 other churchgoers inside the Jolo Cathedral in Sulu province. The second explosive was detonated after the soldiers responded to the first attack inside the church. In the second attack, 15 of the security forces members were wounded.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
The island has long been troubled by the presence of Abu Sayyaf militants. They were blacklisted by the United States and the Philippines because the terrorist organization is involved in bombings, kidnappings and beheadings.
