32 Punjab kisan unions call all-party meeting in Chandigarh on September 10
Bharatiya Kisan Union (Rajewal) president and Samyukt Kisan Morcha leader Balbir Singh Rajewal on Thursday said in the run-up to the Assembly elections in Punjab in 2022, all 32 kisan unions of Punjab had convened an all-party meeting, except the BJP, in Chandigarh at 11 am on September 10 to discuss the strategy to ensure law and order situation.
He has urged each political party to send the names of five representatives, who would be meeting farmer leaders at People's Convention Hall in Chandigarh on September 10, to them by the evening.
Bharatiya Kisan Union (Rajewal) president Balbir Singh Rajewal said the decision to call the all-party meeting was taken at a meeting of 32 farmer unions held under the leadership of Kulwant Singh Sandhu at the Singhu border on Wednesday. The meeting's agenda would be poll rallies and the ongoing farmers' movement against the three farm laws.
On the protest by farmers in Karnal against the lathicharge incident on August 28, Rajewal said it was unfortunate that the Haryana Government was adamant on not ordering the suspension of IAS officer and former Karnal SDM Ayush Sinha, who had "ordered brutal lathicharge on farmers in Karnal on August 8". One farmer died while several others sustained injuries in the lathicharge.
Rajewal alleged that it showed lackadaisical attitude of the Karnal administration and the Haryana Government towards the demands of the farmers.
On the other hand, farmers in Karnal continue to gherao the Mini-Secretariat in support of their demands. Tents have been erected and langar (community kitchen) were being served round the clock.
Kisan leaders said they were ready for 'pucca morcha' and would not call off their sit-in outside the Mini-Secretariat till former Karnal SDM Ayush Sinha was suspended. They are also demanding a compensation of Rs 25 lakh for the next of kin of the farmer, who had sustained injuries in the lathicharge and later died of a heart attack. They have also sought a relief of Rs 2 lakh each for those injured in the Karnal lathicharge.
