Punjab: 6 trains cancelled, 9 diverted as farmers protest against Punjab govt in Amritsar
Agitating against the Punjab govt’s policies, farmers on Monday blocked railway tracks in State causing 9 trains to be diverted and 6 others to be cancelled. The farmers are protesting against Punjab government to demand complete debt waiver.

The farmers will be blocking rail traffic at several places in coming days also. They plan to intensify the protest if their demands are not met in time.

The Punjab Cabinet on Saturday announced that landless farm labourers will be given debt relief of Rs 520 crore. It would be provided to 2.85 lakh farm labourers through various societies. The waiver includes an outstanding principal amount up to Rs. 25000 as on March 31, 2017, and simple interest @7% on it till March 31, 2019.

According to media reports, the debt amounted to nearly Rs. 5,000 crore but the institutionalized debt from cooperative sector out of it is only 16% which works out at Rs. 800 crores.
