While the nation is witnessing protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019, a Pakistani woman, married to an Indian citizen, has been granted Indian citizenship in Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir. Khatija Praveen, wife of Mohammad Taj, was provided with the registration certificate for granting Indian citizenship by the district authorities of Poonch on Monday. According to the information, Khatija, who was born in Pakistan, was granted citizenship on the basis of her marriage to an Indian citizen, under section 5(1)(c) of the Citizenship Act, 1955. The couple expressed happiness over the citizenship granted to Khatija. An official was quoted by news agency as saying, "The certificate of registration granting Indian citizenship to Khatija Praveen, wife of Mohammad Taj, was given to her by District Development Commissioner, Poonch, Rahul Yadav at his office." https://www.ptcnews.tv/caa-protests-unfortunate-says-pm-narendra-modi/ It has come to the light when widespread protests have hit the nation against the the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC). The Citizenship Amendment Bill was passed in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in December 2019 during the winter session of the Parliament. The students and interest groups have taken to streets and the opposition parties such as Congress, Trinamool Congress and the Left have backed the movement, criticising the move as BJP's 'divisive' politics.
