PTC Web Desk:  In a shocking incident, senior Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar allegedly died by suicide on Tuesday at his official residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh. According to initial reports, Kumar shot himself with his PSO’s service pistol inside the basement of his three-storey house.

Soon after the incident, senior Chandigarh Police officials and top Haryana officials reached the spot. They interacted with police personnel present at the scene to gather details about the incident.

Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur, who inspected the site, confirmed the officer’s death, stating, “It appears to be a case of suicide. There is a head injury caused by a firearm. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the reason behind the extreme step.”

Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer, had recently been posted as Inspector General (IG) at the Police Training College (PTC), Sunaria, Rohtak, on September 29. He was reportedly on leave until October 7, though the Haryana Police have not yet officially confirmed his leave status.

His wife, Amneet P Kumar, is a senior IAS officer serving as Secretary, Civil Aviation Department, Haryana. She is currently part of a state government delegation led by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on an official visit to Japan, scheduled to return to India on October 8.

According to police sources, Kumar’s younger daughter was at home when the incident occurred. The officer went to the basement after spending some time on the ground floor. When his daughter later went downstairs, she found him lying in a pool of blood and immediately informed the police control room.

The officer’s body has been sent for a postmortem examination at Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 16, Chandigarh, where a board of doctors will conduct the examination.

Eyewitnesses said the residence had a shared private security guard, who alerted the police after the incident. Workers at a nearby construction site claimed they did not hear any gunshot at the time.
