Heavy rain batters Mumbai, landslide kills two; IMD issues red alert

PTC News Desk: Heavy rains lashed parts of Mumbai since Friday, triggering massive waterlogging and landslide, disrupting daily life and claiming two lives, according to officials.

A landslide hit a residential society in Varsha Nagar, claiming two lives, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said prompting rescue teams to rush to the spot.
Waterlogging was also reported in several neighbourhoods, including Sion, Kurla, Chembur and Andheri. On Shanmukhanand Hall Road in Sion, about one to one-and-a-half feet of water accumulated.
Traffic came to a standstill on the Western Express Highway, while civic authorities were forced to close the Andheri subway after flooding, disrupting commuter movement.
Between 8:30 a.m. Friday and 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Vikhroli recorded 248.5 mm of rainfall, followed by Santacruz at 232.5 mm and Sion at 221 mm. The heaviest spell occurred overnight between 11 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Saturday, with Marol Fire Department logging 216 mm, Santacruz’s Nariyalwadi School 213 mm, and Tagore Nagar School in Vikhroli also 213 mm.
Several other areas, including Dadar Fire Department and Worli Seaface, received over 130 mm in just five hours.
The IMD has issued a warning for continued heavy rainfall in Mumbai and adjoining regions. Flight operations at Mumbai airport were impacted, with IndiGo advising passengers to confirm flight schedules before leaving for the airport.
“Our teams are keeping a close watch on the situation to minimise delays and assist passengers wherever needed,” the airline said.
