Harmanpreet Kaur tries to touch Jay Shah’s feet during trophy ceremony; ICC chairman’s respectful gesture wins hearts
Jay Shah, who earlier served as BCCI secretary, has played a crucial role in the growth of women’s cricket in India
PTC Web Desk: The Indian women’s cricket team created history by clinching the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 after a stunning victory over South Africa in the final on Sunday. Emotions ran high during the post-match trophy presentation when captain Harmanpreet Kaur tried to touch ICC chairman Jay Shah’s feet in a gesture of respect. However, Shah humbly stopped her, winning hearts with his gracious response.
Jay Shah, who earlier served as BCCI secretary, has played a crucial role in the growth of women’s cricket in India. He was instrumental in implementing major reforms, including equal match fees for men and women cricketers, a landmark move that set new standards for gender equality in the sport.
Team India’s journey to the title was remarkable. After suffering three back-to-back defeats in the league stage, Harmanpreet inspired her team to bounce back with renewed determination. The squad beat Australia in the semi-final and outplayed South Africa in the final to be crowned World Champions.
Reflecting on the turnaround, Harmanpreet said the narrow defeat against England became a turning point for the team.
“After that match, we realised we needed a stronger mindset. Everyone began practising visualisation and meditation. Some players didn’t like it initially, but soon we all came together with one goal — to win the World Cup. This is just the beginning for us,” she said.
The Indian captain also hinted at a grand celebration, saying, “We’ve waited long for this moment. The celebration will go on all night — and let’s see what the BCCI plans for us next!”
