ICC rankings:  India’s Test captain Shubman Gill has made a monumental leap in the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings, entering the top 10 for the first time in his career after a record-shattering performance in the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England. Gill surged 15 places to reach the No. 6 spot — his best-ever position in Test cricket — with a career-high 807 rating points.

Gill’s remarkable rise comes after a sensational showing in Birmingham, where he became the first player in Test history to register a double century and a 150 score in the same match. He scored a commanding 269 runs in the first innings and followed it up with 161 in the second. On a batting-friendly surface, India posted over 1000 runs and handed England a crushing 336-run defeat, leveling the five-match series 1-1.

Before this Test, Shubman Gill’s highest ranking was No. 14. The massive jump in the rankings is fueled by a gain of 106 rating points, highlighting his transformation since taking over the Test captaincy. Leading from the front, Gill has silenced critics of his overseas record by amassing 585 runs across two Tests, including two centuries and a double hundred.

Three Indians now in Top 10 Test batters

India now boasts three batters in the ICC Test top 10. Yashasvi Jaiswal continues to hold the No. 4 position with 858 points. Jaiswal scored a fluent 87 in the Birmingham Test, following his century in the series opener.

Pant has been consistent with the bat, notching centuries in both innings of the first Test and scoring 65 in the second innings of the Birmingham match. He has scored 342 runs in the series so far.

Brook claims No. 1 spot, Smith and Mendis rise

England’s Harry Brook is the new No. 1 Test batter in the world. He leapfrogged his teammate and former skipper Joe Root to take the top spot with 886 rating points. Root follows closely with 868, while New Zealand’s Kane Williamson is third with 867.

There were also gains for England’s Jamie Smith, who jumped 16 spots to break into the top 10 for the first time. His impressive scores of 184 not out and 88 in the second Test earned him 753 rating points and the No. 10 spot.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder rose 34 places to 22nd after scoring an unbeaten 367 against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo — the highest individual score of the year so far.
