Setting a rare example for the nation, a poverty-stricken woman in Bihar collected money through begging for constructing a toilet at her house, an official said on Monday.

Amina Khatoon begged in the neighboring villages and collected money to construct a toilet. She is a resident of Pathra Uttar village under Pipra block of Supaul district.

She is working as a laborer to earn her livelihood.

Moved by her commitment, a mason, and a laborer, who worked for her, refused to take their wages, Amina said. She was felicitated by the district administration on Sunday at a function in her village for her unique effort.

Amina is a widow in her late 40s and a mother of a minor boy.

According to Amina, when she approached the concerned block level officials for funds to construct a toilet, they ignored her.

Bihar is at the bottom as far as eradicating open defecation is concerned.

Millions of people in Bihar still practice open defecation and not a single district has so far been declared ODF (Open Defecation Free).
