Anton Chekov's ‘The Marriage Proposal’ To Be Staged In Punjabi Russian playwright Anton Chekov's 19th-century play ‘The Marriage Proposal’ is to be adopted in Punjabi and will be staged here in Gurugram. ‘The Marriage Proposal’ play is adapted by Merry Go Round, a Gurgaon-based theatre group. It is directed by Saurav Padhi. It will be performed on July 28 at the LTG Auditorium. Organisers said that the Punjabi adaptation of the play will recreate Chekov's dialogue-based action and situational humour. In this Punjabi adaptation, they would improvise it in their own way to introduce new characters to bring in regional nuances. ‘The Marriage Proposal’ was written by Anton Chekov's in 1888–1889. It was performed the first time in 1890. Since then, it has been adopted in various languages including English, Greek and Hindi. Organisers said, "Such an adaptation is being done for the first time. Apart from introducing new characters who bring in the regional nuances and humour, traditional folk entertainers, Bahandas, have also been integrated." Bahandas are traditional stand-up artists whose performances are popular in rural Punjab. The introduction of these will "transform the one-act farce into a semi-musical comedy". Organizers also added, “ Through this integration, the director also wants to raise awareness about local Punjabi art forms." -PTC NEWS
