India will receive Covid-19 vaccines from the United States as part of the first 25 million doses that the country plans to supply under a Global Allocation Plan, the US Vice President Kamala D Harris told Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a phone call on Thursday. Ambassador of India to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, said that Vice President Kamala Harris called Prime Minister Narendra Modi and it was a positive and warm conversation.

Sandhu added that US President Joe Biden has announced a Global Allocation Plan of 25 million COVID-19 vaccines. "This is 1st tranche out of total 80 mn vaccines announced earlier. Distribution under 2 categories - via COVAX initiative and directly to neighbors and partner countries," TS Sandhu said. India to figure in both categories and get vaccines as per allocation under COVAX and direct supply, he said, adding that "1st will be COVAX initiative wherein India is included. 2nd, via direct supply to neighbors and partner countries including India, Korea, Canada, and Mexico." He further said that "the US also announced removal of Defense Production Act, which means no more priority supply will now be required. Sandhu also said that they talked about efforts to strengthen the India-US partnership in vaccines and areas of global health and economic recovery and discussed QUAD initiatives.
