Arrest warrant against AAP’s Sanjay Singh in Majithia defamation case

Arrest warrant has been issued against Sanjay Singh, national spokesperson for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), in a defamation case filed against him by senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia in 2016. The arrest warrant was issued by Chief Judicial Magistrate Harsimranjit Singh after Sanjay Singh failed to appear in the court during resumed hearing of the defamation case. Of 71 hearings held in the case so far, Sanjay Singh has attended only four. The court has asked the police to produce him in the court on September 17. Also read | Internet services to remain suspended in Karnal from 12.30 am on September 7 Sanjay Singh's lawyer had filed an application on his behalf seeking exemption from his appearance, which was dismissed by the Judge and the arrest warrants were issued. The defamation case was filed in January 2016 for Sanjay Singh’s alleged defamatory statements at a Moga rally on September 5, 2015, linking Bikram Singh Majithia with the drug trade. The court adjourned the hearing for September 17. Also read | SC refuses to defer NEET-UG exam scheduled for September 12 As per the complaint filed by SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia in January 2016, Sanjay Singh had allegedly made defamatory statements against him at a rally at Moga in Punjab on September 5, 2015. Again, on December 27, 2015, at a public rally at Fatehgarh Sahib, Sanjay Singh made similar statements about Majithia that he was involved in drug trafficking.
