PTC Exclusive! ASI orders preservation of tunnel-like structure at Golden Temple

Punjab News: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has ordered the preservation of a historical tunnel-like structure unearthed during excavation while building a new ‘joda ghar’ as part of the Galliara project in the vicinity of the Golden Temple, Amritsar. The Archaeological Survey of India has said that the exposed structure in the Golden Temple vicinity is heritage remains, and therefore cannot be allowed to be destroyed under the Galliara project. The Archaeological Survey of India has directed the Amritsar administration to initiate necessary steps for the preservation of the unearthed structure under the Punjab Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archeological Sites and Remains Act, 1964, or under the relevant provisions conferred to the Deputy Commissioner for the protection of unprotected heritage structures and remains. However, the authorities may provide technical guidance in the matter, as and when required. Earlier, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh had claimed the tunnel-like structure discovered during the excavation work for a new 'jora ghar' (where devotees keep their footwear) was 'Burj Gianian', which was demolished in 1988 to pave the way for ‘galliara’ (passage) beautification. Sahib on Twitter: "Shukr aa bhai vadala te jeri sangat ne virodh kita... Kuch akal ta aagyi..… https://t.co/wcRdZZMJHg" He had stated the family that used to live there, claiming to be the ancestors of former priest of Golden Temple Sant Singh, got adequately compensated to vacate the land, which was developed as “galliara”. - PTC News
