Azlan Shah Hockey: India concedes last minute equaliser, drops a point against Korea
Pre-tournament favourites India suffered a last minute reverse to concede an equaliser and drop a vital point to South Korea in the 28th Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament at Ipoh on Sunday. With a 1-1 draw in the second game, India and Korea were at level with four points each. The Koreans were, however, ahead on better goal average.
India”s vulnerability to closing minutes pressures was fully exploited by the Koreans who even after conceding a lead two minutes before the end of first half, forced a penalty corner in the last minute and scored a deserving equaliser to upset the applecart of the Indians.
It was mercurial Mandeep Singh who had put India ahead in the 28th minute with a good field goal. His goal was culmination of some good moves that the Indian team worked out in the first half. Fresh from 2-0 triumph over Asian Games champion Japan in the opener yesterday, India continued from where it left yesterday. However, the World number five team could not sustain the tempo, more so in the second half in which ever agile Koreans troubled them with their speed and attempts to break the defence.
Efforts of the Koreans bore fruit late in the second half. It was Jang Jonhyum, who scored twice against Canada yesterday, aded his third penalty corner goal of the tournament in the 60th minute.
India has scored three goals in two games it has played so far and conceded one while the Koreans had beaten Canada 6-3 yesterday.
