Baljeet Saini to take command of Indian Women’s (Junior) team

Placing full confidence in the coaching abilities of Olympian Baljeet Singh Saini, Hockey India on Wednesday asked 33 promising women (junior) players to report to him on January 24 at the Lucknow campus of the Sports Authority of India. After the 24-day camp, Indian junior women’s team will play a series of matches against a visiting France women’s hockey team at Lucknow.

Baljeet Singh Saini, formerly of Punjab and Sind Bank, had been the coach of India under-18 hockey team that finished with silver medals in Hockey 5s championships, both in the Youth Olympic Games qualifier in Thailand and the subsequent Youth Olympic Games in Argentina.

Hockey India has already named Harendra Singh as the coach of the Indian men’s junior team. Harendra Singh was the chief coach of the Indian men’s hockey team that failed to qualify for semi-finals of the 2018 Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup in Bhubaneswar in December last year.

Goalkeepers Bichu Devi Kharibam, Khushboo and Simran Chopra have been called for the camp while defenders Priyanka, Salima Tete, Gagandeep Kaur, Antim, Ishika Choudhary, Priya, Philicia Toppo, Gurleen Grewal, K L Marina and Reema Baxla have been named among Core Group of players.

The midfield players called for the Lucknow camp are Baljeet Kaur, Chetna, Reet, Mariana Kujur, Preeti, Prabhleen Kaur, Jiwan Kishori Toppo, Rozy Bharti, Ajmina Kujur and Upasana Singh, who have all been asked to report. Lalrindinki, Mumtaz Khan, Sharmila Devi, Deepika Soreng, K M Arya, Deepika, Savita, Pinki Ekka, Beena Pandey and Sangita Kumari are the forwards called to the camp.

“The upcoming camp gives us a perfect opportunity to nurture this young talent and prepare it for a tough series against an experienced French Women’s team in Lucknow. We will be focusing on developing these players, emphasizing on their fitness, speed, stamina, skills, and preparing them tactically as well as mentally, for bigger challenges that the team is going to face in the future, including the 8th Women’s Junior Asia Cup,” said Coach Baljeet Singh.

Defender Salima Tete, who is currently with the Indian Senior Women’s team camp in Bengaluru and will be traveling to Spain for the matches against the hosts and Ireland, will report to the Indian Junior Women’s team camp in Lucknow on her return from the tour. Forward Sangita Kumari will also be reporting for the camp in Lucknow after she completes her rehabilitation treatment at SAI Centre, Bengaluru.
