‘Secured price’ for veggie farmers now under Bhavantar Bharpai Scheme

From tomorrow, Haryana will become the first state in the country to provide “secured price” of vegetable crops to its farmers, under the Bhavantar Bharpai Scheme (Price Deficit Compensation). Under the scheme launched by the state government the farmers will be compensated to the extent of difference between their input costs and the amount at which they have to sell their vegetables in due to prices falling drastically. Bhavantar Bharpai Scheme to offer relief to farmers in Haryana “If the prices of potatoes fall to Re 1 per kg on any given day and the input cost of the farmer is Rs 4 per kg, the government will compensate him for this difference of Rs 3 per kg,” Agriculture Minister OP Dhankar, the brain behind this scheme, said. He said in the first phase, the government has included four vegetable crops under the scheme – potatoes, onions, tomatoes and cauliflower. The scheme will be launched by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar will tomorrow. The departments of Horticulture, Revenue and Agriculture Marketing Boards will be involved and the registration of farmers involved in growing vegetables will begin from tomorrow itself. “The idea struck me after I noticed that after increasing the state advised price (SAP) for sugarcane from Rs 310 to Rs 330, the area under the crop has increased from 90,000 hectares to 2 lakh hectares,” said the Agriculture minister.
