Bharatiya Janata Party’s Ravi Kant Sharma has been elected the new Chandigarh mayor on Friday.
As per the report, the newly elected Chandigarh Mayor Ravi Kant Sharma got 17 votes while the Congress candidate Devinder Singh Babla managed to get only five votes. Reportedly, two votes were declared invalid.

Meanwhile, the Chandigarh member of Parliament Kirron Kher and councillor Heera Negi were not present as they could not attend the election citing health reasons.
After Sharma was declared the Mayor, the Congress party boycotted the Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor polls. The party members alleged cameras were used by the BJP during the polls.

Sharma is a first-time councillor. Prior to becoming mayor, he was a senior deputy mayor in 2020. He has succeeded BJP’s Raj Bala Malik who was elected as 24th Mayor of Chandigarh last year.
It is pertinent to mention that this is Bharatiya Janata Party’s fifth consecutive term and the last mayoral election of the present municipal corporation House, which goes for the polling by the end of this year.
