Burari mystery: 'Thanksgiving ritual’ led to deaths, says police

Burari mystery: 'Thanksgiving ritual’ led to deaths, says police Delhi police suspects that a seven-day “thanksgiving ceremony” may have led to mass suicide in Burari on Sunday. After analyzing the handwritten notes recovered and reviewing CCTV footage from the neighbourhood, the Delhi Police on Wednesday said that the “ritual” was part of a seven-day “thanksgiving ceremony” in which death wasn’t ever in the picture. The Bhatia family was confident that they would survive the ceremony, which prescribed a ritualistic hanging, and had even planned to repeat the ritual with a relative of daughter in law family who was facing problems, the police added. According to the notes, the Bhatia family believed that this ritual would help them achieve salvation. The analyst also revealed that most of the handwritten notes were written by Priyanka Bhatia, Lalit’s niece, whoe was about to get married in November this year. Lalit didn’t want anyone to know about his condition and he instructed his family not to speak about it. He promised strength to his family, if each of them follows his advice. It seems that his family members trusted him as he was able to direct his family in their tough times. They believed Lalit’s claims that his father regularly visits him and Priyanka Bhatia got engaged, in spite being Maangalik and also attributed the family’s growing wealth. He also told women and children of his family to untie each other’s hand once the ritual is over.  Notes also revealed that the entire family followed the exact steps mentioned in the book. -PTC News
