CAA protests: Former JNU student and activist Umar Khalid detained by Delhi Police

CAA protests: Former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student and activist Umar Khalid and other protesters have been detained by Delhi police for protesting against Citizenship Amendment Act, near Red Fort on Thursday. Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (prohibits assembly of more than 4 people in an area) has been imposed near Red Fort on Thursdsay morning. However, large number of protesters staged protest in Red Fort area where Section 144 has been imposed. Meanwhile, Delhi Police stated that "Permission has not been granted for the protest march to be held by the communist party from Mandi House to Jantar Mantar over Citizenship Ammendment Act and NRC at 12 pm on Thursday."  Also, long jam at Delhi-Gurugram expressway was witnessed due to police barricading. Delhi Police PRO MS Randhawa was quoted by ANI as saying: "We request protest organizers to hold protests at designated places only. A message has been given to all concerned districts to keep a check on all Delhi borders." MHA sources also revealed that "There were few protests in Delhi in past 24 hours which were organised by mobilising people through WhatsApp groups but no organization has come up to take responsibility of protest. Few locations identified where officers have asked to provide local intelligence frequently." -PTC News
