Capt Amarinder appoints Ex DGP Suresh Arora as Chief Information Commissioner

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Monday approved the appointment of former DGP Suresh Arora as state Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) and senior journalist Asit Jolly as Information Commissioner.

A spokesperson of the Chief Minister’s Office said that the notification to this effect had been issued by the state government.

It may be recalled that Suresh Arora, IPS officer of 1982 batch had retired in February this year as state Police Chief after putting in 33 years of service in different capacities. An alumnus of University of London, Arora, during his illustrious career, had served the state as SSP Patiala, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur and UT Chandigarh between April 1987 and August 1994. He was also posted as DIG, Chief Minister’s Security, from September 1995 till July 1998, before being appointed IGP-cum-Director Vigilance Bureau in 2001.

Arora became DGP of Punjab Police in October 2015. It was during his tenure that the Punjab Police department was short listed as the ‘Best Govt. Department to implement RTI’ by the State Information Commission. Arora also has the distinction of passing ‘Online Certificate Course’ on the RTI Act, 2005 administered by Centre for Good Governance, Hyderabad with “A” Grading.

Chandigarh-based Asit Jolly, a noted journalist, currently works as Deputy Editor with India Today Group. He has earlier served as Special Correspondent of The Asian Age and BBC earlier.
