Center not serious over problems faced by farmers, poor people and small traders: Sunil Jakhar

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president and Gurdaspur MP Sunil Jakhar has said that the President’s address normally reflects policies and programmes of the Central Government but today it was silent over the core issues and speaks volumes of non-serious/indifferent attitude of the NDA led government to resolve the problems which farmers, poor classes and small traders had been facing for past three years.

Commenting over the President’s address marking the opening of the last budget session of the NDA govt; Jakhar said it unfolds Modi government’s negative attitude and once again indicates that it is least concerned about common people.

“Farmers are reeling under serious economic and social crisis. Cost of agricultural inputs skyrocketing but price of produce is not remunerative. Modiji had sold dreams claiming to double farmers’ income by 2022 but it visibly appears now that the govt led by him was not going to turn the same into a reality. Mere his (Modiji) spicy speeches can’t double the income; some solid steps need to be taken. The Center was not cooperating in waiving debts of farmers," he added.

Flaying the Center for not taking initiatives for welfare of youth, Jakhar said that policy to provide jobs to youths is also missing from the Presidential address. Unemployment triggers other plenty of other social and economic problems; no efforts had been made since 2014 to explore employment avenues.

Modiji has been playing politics only through each speech to appease poor people but the so-called welfare schemes had not benefitted the downtrodden. Center had been concentrating to extend maximum of favors to corporate houses.

Regretting that no road-map to simplify the GST has been drawn, the Congress leader said that technical snags in the GST exercise had hit small farmers worst but Center had no planning to resolve the issues.

“Modi Sarkar has yet to come of the Gujarat election shocks but they were not ready to learn a lesson from the writings on the wall. Swachh Bharat Mission could not be implemented in letter and spirit. Claims on industrial development in border area were farce. Border-belt residents stand by uniform-wearing saviors of our border but Central leaders deliver only lip-sympathies. People were eagerly waiting to teach the NDA a befitting lesson when country goes to polls in 2019," he said.
