Indian variant of coronavirus: Amid the second wave of coronavirus, the government of India has asked social media platforms to immediately remove the content which mentions or refers to the term 'Indian variant' of COVID-19. As per the report, the digital platforms informed they have received the latest advisory.

Indian variant of coronavirus: Amid second wave of coronavirus, govt asked social media platforms to remove content refers to 'Indian variant' of COVID-19. A notice issued in this regard stated that a "false statement" was being circulated online related to the 'Indian variant' of COVID-19 is spreading across the countries. The ministry also said the matter has been clarified by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on May 12, 2021, via a press release. Therefore, the Centre has asked social media platforms to "remove all the content that names, refers to, or implies 'Indian variant' of coronavirus from your platform immediately". Earlier, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology had issued advisories regarding false news/misinformation concerning COVID-19 on social media platforms. As per data by the government, the country has 53 crore WhatsApp users, 44.8 crore YouTube users, 41 crore Facebook users, while 21 crore use Instagram and 1.75 crore are on Twitter.
