India was shot out of gold medal match as the defending champions Australia won the tie-breaker 3-1 after playing a 1-1 draw in the stipulated period in the final of the 37th and farewell edition of Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament at Breda in the Netherlands on Sunday. India thus equalled its previous best performance of Silver of 2016 while it was the 15th Champions Trophy title for Australia. Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament 2018: India shot out of gold medal match Though Indians were beaten in the shoot out, they won the hearts of the hockey fans with their gallant play, coming from behind to hold the World Cup champions to 1-1 in the regulation period. Sreejesh, captain of Indian team, who stood like a wall throughout the tournament, finally gave in under pressure and was able to save only two of five penalty shoot outs. On the other hand, Indians fumbled with their chances. Only exception was Manpreet Singh, who scored, after being checked by Australian goalkeeper Lovell. Sardar Singh, Harmanpreet Singh and Lalit failed with their attempts. Playing only its second final in the history of the Champions Trophy, India had a magnificent run in the farewell edition starting with a flattering 4-0 win over Pakistan. India beat Olympic champions Argentina and held the hosts, the Netherlands to a 1-1 draw. Even in the pool matches, India lost to Australia. Australia made its intentions clear right from the start testing Sreejesh in the goal in the opening minute. With lowest rate of penalty corner conversions of the tournament, Australia met with success in this department today. Govers beat Sreejesh, who incidentally, palmed the ball into his own goal, to give Australia crucial lead in the 24th minute. India could not neutralise this lead till the 42nd minute when baby of the team Vivek Prasad Sagar of Sansarpur scored with a powerful shot from the middle of the circle after a few exchange of shots. The fourth and final quarter did not produce any goal thus forcing organisers to enforce penalty shoot out rule to decide the winner of the farewell edition of this elite tournament. Incidentally, it was not Sreejesh or India day. The day belonged to Lovell and Australia.-
