Chandra Grahan 2020: Lunar Eclipse will be witnessed on Friday night in many parts of the world including India. The first Lunar Eclipse of the year will begin at 10:37 pm on January 10 which will end at around 2:42 am on January 11. In a normal Lunar eclipse, the moon passes through the central part of the earth's shadow also known as umbra, and it witnesses the considerable darkening of the lunar disc. In penumbral lunar eclipse, which will appear on January 10, there will be only a slight dimming of the lunar surface, demonstrating the moon larger than the usual during the four hours of the Lunar eclipse.   • Chandra Grahan will be the first of the four penumbral lunar eclipses that will appear this year. The other three lunar eclipses would be seen on June 5, July 5 and November 30.
  • In penumbral lunar eclipse, the moon drifts into Earth's shadow which is why its called Penumbra. Unlike other eclipses, the penumbral eclipse is a subtle celestial event and can be difficult to see as the covered part is only a little fainter than the rest of the Moon.
  • Penumbral lunar eclipse will be visible from different countries in Asia, Africa, Australia and Europe. In India, the Chandra Grahan will be seen acorss the nation.
  • According to National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), tonight's Lunar elcipse is also called Wolf Moon, Ice Moon in US, Yule in Europe, Shakambhari Purnima, Paush Purnima in India while Duruthu Poya in Sri Lanka.
  • As per Hindu calendar, the full Moon is celebrated as Shakambhari Purnima, which appears in the eight-day Shakambari Navratri holiday that celebrates the goddess Shakambhari. Also, the full moon is known as Paush Purnima, which appears in the last day of the Hindu month Paush.

  • In Sri Lanka, the first full moon is marked as Duruthu Poya, which commemorates the first visit of Siddhartha Gautama Buddha to Sri Lanka.
  • The lunar eclipse can be seen through the naked eyes while for the solar eclipse special equipment is required.
  • The Chandra Grahan will make way for longer days ahead.
  • During the eclipse, the moon goes through a whole cycle in two to three hours time. According to the belief, teh food deteriorates faster during the eclipse. Therefore, it is believed that one should not eat food during the time of lunar eclipse.
