India’s journey in China Open started on a sour note with ace shuttler PV Sindhu losing to Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand, albeit after a closely fought match. Sindhu lost to Chochuwong 21-12, 13-21, 21-19 in a nail-biting 58 minutes.
The men fared no better. The doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty crashed out after a straight-game loss to Japanese pair, Takeshi Kamura and Keigo Sonoda.
Satwik and Chirag, 15th world rank-holders, couldn’t hold their ground against their opponents and lost in the second round by 19-21, 8-21. The match lasted for just 33 minutes at the Olympic Sports Center Xincheng Gynasium.
PV Sindhu recently scripted history by winning the maiden BWF World Championship. But she could not repeat the winning performance in the China Open. However, she did give a tough fight. In the first round, she defeated Pornpawee Chochuwong, but ran into rough terrain in the latter rounds.
