Central teams to assist Punjab, Chandigarh amid surge in Covid-19 cases

As coronavirus cases in Chandigarh and Punjab have started rising at a rapid pace, the central government has come up with a plan to help states contain the disease. The Health Ministry has rushed Central teams to Punjab and UT of Chandigarh, which witnessed a recent spike in cases and high mortality. The UT Chandigarh is reporting 2095 active cases whereas its cumulative cases stand at 5268. Testing Per Million and cumulative positivity stand at 38054 and 11.99 percent, respectively. The Central teams of Health Ministry will be stationed for 10 days in Punjab and Haryana. The two-member teams will comprise a community medicine expert from PGIMER, Chandigarh & an epidemiologist from NCDC. It will assist the States and UT in the review of public health measures for containment, surveillance, testing, and efficient clinical management of COVID-19 patients with the aim to reduce mortality. It has also been reported that the teams will also guide in addressing challenges related to timely diagnosis and follow up. On Sunday, India became the first country to report more than 90,000 cases in a day. India's COVID-19 tally has crossed the 41-lakh mark with a single-day spike of 90,633 new cases and 1,065 deaths in the last 24 hours.
