Coronavirus India: The World Health Organization said that the COVID-19 variant (B.1.617) first found in India will be called the ‘Delta’ variant. The Covid-19 variant first reported in India will be called 'Delta' while the earlier found variant in the country will be referred to as 'Kappa', the WHO said.

Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, technical lead COVID-19 at WHO, stated that “the labels don’t replace existing scientific names which convey important scientific information. "The labels will continue to be used in research," he said, adding that no country should be stigmatized for detecting and reporting Covid variants. The WHO South-East Asia had earlier stated that WHO does not identify viruses or variants with the names of countries where they were first reported from. The clarification from the world health body came after the Government of India advised the media not to describe the B.1.617 variant as ‘Indian variant’. The government had said that “This is to clarify that WHO has not associated the term ‘Indian Variant’ with the B.1.617 variant of the coronavirus in its 32-page document.
