Amritsar, August 6: The Indian weightlifting squad for the Commonwealth Games 2022 landed in India on Saturday from Birmingham, UK.
When the team's star weightlifters and coaches arrived at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar, they were warmly received by the district administration.
Harpreet Singh Sudan, Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar, welcomed the athletes with a bouquet of flowers, as other officials garland them.
Notably, the India weightlifting squad topped the medal tally in the sport with 10 medals - 3 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze.
It should be mentioned that four of the Indian team's weightlifters are from Punjab. Weightlifter Lovepreet Singh, who hails from Amritsar, bagged bronze in the final of the Men's 109 kg category. Where weightlifter Vikas Thakur from Punjab's Ludhiana won the silver medal in the men's 96kg category, Lovepreet Singh (109kg), Gurdeep Singh (109kg) and Harjinder Kaur (71kg) won bronze medals for India at Commonwealth Games 2022.
As the team landed in Amritsar on Saturday, Punjab sports minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer congratulated the athletes on their achievements.
Those who landed at the Amritsar airport are Jeremy Lalrinnunga, Achinta Sheuli, Mirabai Chanu, Sanket Sargar, Vikas Thakur, Bindyarani Devi, Lovepreet Singh, Gururaja Poojary, Gurdeep Singh and Harjinder Kaur.
Ajay Singh, Popy Hazarika, Usha B.N, and Purnima Pandey were also among the players who arrived today.
