Davinder Singh Babla guilty in Sec 26 shed allotment case Congress councillor and Leader of the Opposition in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, Davinder Singh Babla, has been found guilty in the case of allotment of sheds at the Sector 26 grain market by a local court on Wednesday. The quantum of the sentence will be announced on Saturday. Babla was convicted by a lower court in July 2014, but released on probation on bail bonds of Rs 50,000. The prosecution has also filed an appeal against him being acquitted under Section 420 of the IPC in the same order. He was earlier found guilty under Sections 465, 468 and 471 of the IPC in the same order. Chandigarh Police in 2009 had registered a case of cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy against Babla, a former chairman of the market committee, and Rakesh, president of the Arhtiya Association of the Sector 26 grain market, for irregularities in the allotment of 69 platforms at the market. It was alleged that although there were 59 licensees, 10 ineligible persons were also accommodated during the auction held on July 24 when Babla was chairman of the market committee. Fearing being declared proclaimed offender, Babla surrendered on December 28, 2009, after a local court issued orders asking him to appear. -PTC News-
