New Delhi: Police have arrested a 32-year-old-man on Monday for allegedly killing a woman brutally in southeast Delhi's Amar Colony area. The accused, Mohd Sufiyan, was in a relationship with the victim's friend, both of whom lived together, and used to come to the woman's residence for an overnight stay. But after his girlfriend and the victim had a falling out, he was forced to look for other costly accommodations to spend time with his girlfriend, with whom he was having an extra-marital affair, police said. On March 27, the body of Pooja (30) was found at her Amar Colony residence with wounds on her neck and wrist. The woman had been killed on March 24 but it was on March 27 that her body was discovered. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Romil Baaniya, initially it was a blind case for them. A team led by under training IPS officer Rohit Rajbir Singh, currently holding the charge as SHO Amar Colony, was constituted. Around 40 suspects were interrogated but no headway could be made. The police conducted advanced technical surveillance including investigation into various social media platforms, VoIP platforms, said Baaniya. The accused kept pinging the victim on her Facebook even after her death in order to show himself as a very close friend, police said. This made the investigators suspicious about him. The post-mortem report indicated that she was killed between 9 am to 5 pm on March 24. However, the police team managed to narrow down the time of her death between 1.30-2.30 pm. The CCTV footage from 12 cameras was scanned and a man, who is not a local of the area, was identified. But since he had come in a cycle rickshaw, his face was covered by the hood. On basis of the footage, police managed to chart the route taken by the accused after killing the woman and they recovered the bloodstained clothes of the accused from Sarai Kale Khan. Sufiyan was questioned in connection with the case. He grew cautious that the police was on his trail. On Monday, while he was trying to escape with his girlfriend, he was arrested from near Kalkaji temple, said a senior police officer. He was questioned for two hours and confessed to killing Pooja. Sufiyan is a regular club-goer. Around a year back, he and his friend Samir came in contact with Pooja and her friend at a club in Vasant Vihar. Samir, who is already married got into a relationship with Pooja, who was separated from her husband. As Sufiyan grew close to Pooja's married friend, they used to spend time with each other at Pooja's rented accommodation. Whenever the couple would come to Pooja's place, she would have to spend time outside at someone else's residence and it irked her. She brought this up with her friend and they had an argument. Sufiyan, who was already in heavy debt due to his luxurious lifestyle, was finding it difficult to afford taking out his girlfriend to expensive places. The accused had also lent Rs 35,000 to Pooja when they were friends, but she refused to return the amount. He also knew that she kept her jewellery and cash at home and planned to steal them after killing her. He came to her house on March 24 on the pretext of resolving issues. He asked Pooja to close her eyes saying he had a surprise gift for her. "When she closed her eyes, he slit her throat from behind and then smothered her. Later, he slit her wrist," said Baaniya. He ransacked her house and stole jewellery and money in order to mislead police into believing that robbery was the motive behind Pooja's death. — PTI-
