Amid concerns over the Delta Plus variant, classified as a ‘Variant of Concern’, the Maharashtra government is likely to re-impose uniform restrictions across the state.
The Maharashtra cabinet was informed about the new Delta Plus variant by the state health ministry. The experts have even raised serious concerns over its presence.
A total of 21 cases of the variant have been reported from seven districts of Maharashtra. The State Health Minister Rajesh Tope said that the government was isolating such cases and taking all details like travel history, contact tracing and if they have been vaccinated.
He added that the government has decided to send the samples for the genome sequence study.
Meanwhile, no deaths have been reported due to the Delta Plus variant so far. It is pertinent to mention that the symptoms and treatment for the variant are same. No children have been infected with this variant of concern, he added.
The state health ministry has already expressed concern that the variant may escape antibodies and likely to affect people who have already been vaccinated.
Tope also directed the officials that the variant should be monitored closely, and information about these cases should be collected and recorded for research.
