ED raids in Punjab: Weeks before Punjab Assembly elections 2022, the Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday conducted multiple raids in the state, including the premises of Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi's nephew, in connection with illegal sand mining. Around 10 places were raided by Enforcement Directorate including Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi's nephew Bhupinder Singh Honey's home. Meanwhile, Punjab CM said that a "raid is being conducted (on the premises of his relative). They're targetting me and trying to put pressure on me in view of upcoming Assembly polls. This is not good for democracy. We're ready to fight this. The same thing happened during West Bengal elections." Also Read | Punjab polls: Congress bats for Charanjit Singh Channi as CM candidate? Illegal sand mining has been one of the heated issues in Punjab. The ruling Congress was accused by its former Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh, of links to the trade. Amarinder Singh had alleged that all Congress MLAs were involved in the illegal trade of sand. "If I start telling names I will have to start from the top," he had said.

Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has emerged a strong challenge to the Congress in Punjab, has also slammed Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi over the allegations of illegal sand mining.
ED raids come weeks before Punjab Assembly elections 2022, which is scheduled to be held on February 20. The results will be declared on March 10.
