Ex mayor of Chandigarh and senior Congress leader Poonam Sharma joins BJP
In a major blow to the city Congress, former Mayor Poonam Sharma, a close aide of Navjot Kaur Sidhu, joined Bhartiya Janta Party on Tuesday. She was denied the party ticket for the city Lok Sabha seat.

Poonam Sharam joined the party in the presence of BJP's Punjab election in-charge and MP Kirron Kher. She is said to be unhappy with the Congress, particularly former MP and the party candidate Pawan Kumar Bansal.

A senior BJP leader said, “She has been a disgruntled leader in the Congress. Our leaders and she got in touch with each other. It is also a sign of dissent against Bansal’s nomination. She, along with her supporters, will join us and it will be beneficial for our party.”
