EXPLAINED: Chidambaram's Arrest Decoded; Vendetta or Just Desserts?

Former Union minister P Chidambaram was on borrowed time since May 2017, when the ED filed an Enforcement Case Information Report against INX Media case and its directors Peter and Indrani Mukerjea as well as Karti Chidambaram, the minister’s son. Now, the Supreme Court has dismissed the appeal he filed against the Delhi high court order dismissing his anticipatory bail plea in the INX Media case being probed by the CBI. https://twitter.com/ANI/status/1165876963677892615?s=20 It was alleged that Chidambaram facilitated foreign investment worth Rs 305 crore in INX Media in 2007, when he was finance minister, at the behest of his son, who received illegal gratification. Even though they have denied all allegations, attributing the case to political vendetta, another case on irregularities in the Aircel-Maxis deal of 2006 may yet be the nail in the coffin.P Chidambaram Speaking of political vendetta, the Congress was on the receiving end of this allegation during the tenure of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Amit Shah was arrested in the Sohrabuddin encounter case and his bail plea was opposed by CBI on the grounds that he might try to tamper with evidence. INX Media Case: SC dismisses the appeal filed by P Chidambaram against the Delhi High Court order If this is indeed political vendetta at play, Chidambaram was a sitting duck as soon as the UPA alliance was discredited in 2014 and thereabouts. The floundering Congress does not have the means or the goodwill to make a real difference, which Chidambaram would have realized by now. That might explain his crisp, short replies to any queries by CBI officials, who even scaled the wall to get to him. Vendetta or plain cause and effect, Chidambaram’s arrest is yet another twist in the high octane political purging the country has been witnessing for a few years now. -PTC News
