Chandigarh, August 2: Farmers' organisations have called off the dharna scheduled for August 3 after a meeting with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday. The development comes as Punjab CM assured payment of dues of sugarcane farmers by September 7. The meeting was held at Punjab Bhawan. Agriculture minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal was also present at the meeting. According to sources, CM Bhagwant Mann in the meeting accepted all Punjab-related demands of the unions and said that payment of dues of sugarcane farmers will be done by September 7, 2022. Notably, the non-political United Farmers' Front had announced a chakka jam in Punjab on August 3. Farmer leader Amarjit Singh Rara had earlier said that the main demands of the farmers are that the sugarcane mills should run from November 1 for the season 2022/23, the rate of sugarcane should be Rs. 360, and compensation should also be given for the loss of sugarcane. Apart from this, the government should give compensation for the damage caused by the soft pink weevil and whitefly, and the government should announce the subsidy in advance for the maintenance of paddy straw.
