Farmers Protest: Punjabi writer Surjit Patar announces to return Padma Shri award

Expressing solidarity with the farmers protesting in India, the eminent Punjabi writer, and poet Surjit Patar has announced to return the Padma Shri award in support of farmers protest against farm laws 2020. Punjabi writer Surjit Patar said that he had written two lines while receiving the Padma Shri award which he remembered again while returning the Padma Shri award. These lines were: "ਅੰਮੜੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਖਣ ਲੱਗੀ, ਤੂੰ ਧਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਗੀਤ ਰਹੇਂਗਾ; ਪਦਮ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਵੀ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪਾਤਰ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰਾ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਰਹੇਂਗਾ। (The mother began to say to me, You will be the song of the earth; Even if you become a Padma Shri, you will be my Surjit)" Also Read | Parkash Singh Badal decides to stand with farmers, returns Padma Vibhushan "I'm deeply hurt with the behaviour of the Centre with the farmers protesting at Delhi borders. Meanwhile, the farmers have called for nationwide shutdown as a part of Bharat Bandh call on December 8. The Petrol Pump Dealers Association extended support to the Bharat Bandh called by farmer unions on December 8 and announced that the petrok pumps in Punjab would remain closed on Tuesday.
