A brace of goals of penalty corner conversions by Harmanpreet Singh helped India to edge out Malaysia 2-1 and enter semi-finals of the XXI Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast on Tuesday. In a game of tantalising turns, India managed to hold on to the match winning lead it earned in the closing moments of the third quarter. Malaysians who needed to win to stay in the race for semis played their hearts out but were unable to repeat the performance they had against Wales. While India converted two of its nine penalty corners, Malaysia failed to use any of the three it got. Its only consolation was a field goal by Fitri in the second quarter. Gold Coast 2018: Hockey: India beats Malaysia, enters semis Though Harmanpreet by scoring twice has taken his personally tally of goals to four in this competition, India has to do serious introspection about its poor conversion rate. Even field scoring capacities of the team are becoming a suspect. Except for two goals by Dilpreet and one by SV Sunil, India has not much to show in this department. India has to play England and Malaysia will take on Pakistan in the last pool encounters. The last two games may determine pool positions as also the second qualifier besides India.Pakistan has three points from as many games as it is yet to record a win here. Its games against Wales, India and England have ended in draws. India-Malaysia encounter was fierce played on a fast pace. Though there was little to choose between the two teams as far skills or moves were concerned, India took their chances and won in run of play. Indian forward line did create openings but poor finish and fumbling inside the striking circle made it easier for Malaysian defenders to dispel all moves. On the other hand, Malaysians lacked penetration and were dependent upon their good penalty corner conversion in the tournament so far. Unfortunately, it was not their day today.-
