Gold Coast 2018: India beats England 4-3, tops pool In an exciting finish, India scored twice in the last minute to score an exciting 4-3 win over England to finish at top of pool in XXI Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast on Wednesday. It was India's third win in four matches and first defeat for England in the pool matches. India now plays New Zealand in semis while England takes on defending champions Australia in the other semi-final. The India-England game witnessed some vantage hockey. Both teams fought like as if it was a title match. Engl;and had taken the lead in the 17th minute. The English players held on to the lead till the breather. It was only after change of ends that it was skipper Manpreet Singh who scored a brilliant opportunist goal from almost the top of the circle with a rasping drive. Once on par, Indian players turned more aggressive as they put everything into the game, attacking their opponents with ferocity and purpose. Continuing to build pressure, India forced a penalty corner in the 51st minute which was followed by another one. The second one saw Rupinderpal's second attempt getting into the goal to give India lead. But the joy of the Indian team was short lived as England did not take long to restore parity with a neat penalty corner conversion by Russel. Four minutes later when England forced yet another penalty corner it was Sam Ward that surprised Indian defence with a deep powerful flick. It looked as if England would wrap up the match with 3-2 lead. Indian team, however, had different ideas. It replaced goalkeeper with an attacker and in an unprecedented turn scored two goals in last 90 seconds, first, a penalty corner conversion by Varun and then hard working Mandeep chipping in with a brilliant field goal to give India a splendid win. These goals were not without referrals to umpiring adjudications. Luckily some of these decisions went India's way to the great disappointment of England. —PTC News-
